April 2019 Newsletter

Happy near-spring to our members!  Our next general membership meeting will be April 1, 2019 at 7:30 PM at the indoor range.   As always, a printable PDF version of this newsletter can be downloaded by clicking this link.

● Effective April 1, the new gate combination for the outdoor range will be:

A paper paper newsletter will be mailed out this month with the combination to all members in good standing.  If you read this, but do not receive a newsletter in the mail in April, that means that you owe dues or work assessments.  Please contact our Treasurer, Martin, who can help make things right.  His email is tenxtreasurer@hotmail.com.

● The recent storms caused much havoc at the outdoor range with at least four trees uprooted and power lines pulled down. Even the access road was blocked. Fortunately, with the help of several members, we have been able to get the range cleaned up and reopened. Special thanks go out to Paul Englert, Bill Frears, Ed Richter, Mitch Vogel, Mark Haentiges and Roy Smith. All of them helped to get the trees cut up and the power lines replaced. Without dedicated members like these, it would be a struggle. If you see one of them, please let them know how much it is appreciated.

There will be a Clean Up Day at the outdoor range on Saturday April 13, 2019, starting at 8:00 am.  We need as many hands on board as possible.  Bring gloves and wear boots.  Expect the range to be wet.  We will need a couple of wheelbarrows, some prybars, tree saws or pruners, and a leaf blower.

● Both of our indoor pistol leagues had their final matches last month. Our SPL team’s final record was 22 wins, 10 losses. The NFPL team’s record was 29 wins and 15 losses. We want to thank every member who participated and every member who helped out with the leagues over this winter.

● The combined Pistol League Awards Banquet will be held on Saturday April 27, 2019, at Kotecki’s Gardenview Grove located on Seneca Street, West Seneca. Tickets are $25.00 per person and available from Al Hopkins or Jim Gerstung. We encourage everyone to attend and support our team!

● The Western New York Outdoor Pistol League will start on May 28, 2019. League fees are $5.00 to join and $3 per match. People interested in shooting a summer outdoor, relaxed pistol league should strongly consider participating. Interested shooters should contact Jim Gerstung, out team captain at jgerstung @ outlook.com. The league allows shoot-aheads and you can fire multiple matches in one day.

● We hosted the NRA Indoor Pistol Championship Sectional on March 1, 2 and 3. We had tremendous volunteer turnout. In fact, there are so many members who deserve a mention, there is not enough space in this newsletter. Thank you to everyone who helped run targets, run the match, clean the range, and otherwise help out.

● A staple for many years to the members driving out to the outdoor range was Dick “The Destroyer” Beyer sitting on his golf cart waiving as we drove by.  Dick, a professional wrestling figure and coach at Amherst and Akron schools passed away last week at age 88.  Dick opened his “Destroyer Park Golf” facility in 2013 and it is the first “Park Golf” course in the United States.  Dick was friendly to the shooting sports and attained the rank of Eagle Scout before attending Syracuse University in 1949.  Good shooting, Dick.

To all our members, good shooting to you as well,

P. Vasilion, President
