August 2700 Tournament Results

Thank you to all of the competitors who came out for our match. We had a good turnout, some good scores, and beat the worst of the weather. The final match bulletin (in .pdf format) is linked below.

As a reminder, we are hosting the Western Region of the New York State Pistol Championship on September 17 and 18. The match may be fired across two days. We prefer to squad shooters for these matches, so please contact us to reserve a date. The match programs are linked below also. Please note that we are hosting a NRA Distinguished Revolver match and a DCM Excellence-In-Competition (“hardball”) match over both of the Championship days.

Savage Arms in town

Genesee Conservation League update

Hello Shooters:

Due to the range roof collapse and the partial collapse of the range’s outer cinder block wall, the April 10 and May 15 (2011) pistol tournaments (1800 matches) are cancelled.

The Board of Directors at the Genesee Conservation League chose this course of action. The damage has been cleaned up but the repair work and rebuilding has yet to begin.

So, GCL won’t host any 1800 Indoor matches until further notice. When I know, all of you will know. Thank you for your patience. See you all at the 10-x matches and the Syracuse Pistol Club’s matches.

Thank you to all of our competitors and volunteers who staffed this weekend’s match. Preliminary results are attached below. Please note that we automatically recalculate total scores. If the score posted is different than what you wrote down before you left the range, it is probably due to a math error on the score card.

Scores will be submitted to the NRA in two weeks. If you have a discrepancy and want it reviewed, please contact us as soon as possible so we can pull the targets and review the score.

2011 Pistol Sectional

The registration window for the 2011 Sectional is now open. The official program is attached below. Remember, you must register in writing by March 14 to ensure that you have a reserved berth. Registrations mailed in after March 14 or show-up registrations cannot be guaranteed.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE THE DATE CHANGE: March 18, 19 & 20.

The dates for the sectional were set by the NRA and are one week later than traditionally scheduled. Please remind your fellow competitors!

Registration is $28.00 for individuals. Team entries are an additional $4.00 per shooter. Feel free to drop a note if you have any questions.

Pistol Permit Safety Course February19

We will be hosting a pistol permit safety course at the indoor range on Saturday, Februar 19, 2011, beginning at 9:00 a.m. and running to about 2:00 pm. Cost is estimated to be around $25.00 which covers the materials. The certificate is valid for 5 years. As you may know, the safety course is a mandatory prerequisite to obtain a pistol permit in New York.

Outdoor range update

Thanks to an excellent member turnout on Saturday (November 6th), the work party scheduled for November 13 is CANCELED!

Many thanks to all who came out on two cold Saturday mornings to help replace the 25-yard target supports. Six new 2″ thick, twenty foot long, hemlock planks were drilled, coated with preservative and mounted — all in under two and a half hours! An individual thank you to all of our volunteers will be printed in the December newsletter.

The next phase of the project involves disassembling, cleaning, re-greasing and reassembly of the 30 target spindles and their roller bearings. Anyone interested in helping out can work on one or spindles at their leisure at home. As the spindles are refurbished, they can be bolted to the supports or returned to the outdoor range for a later work party. This aspect of the project will be discussed at the December meeting, so member with questions should attend for that report.

Lastly, our Chief Range Officer, Bruce Matthies reports that persons were observed shooting high powered rifles at gourds placed on the ground along with other non-approved targets. Compounding this no-no, the shooters were firing from in front of the firing line and the remnants were left on the range by the shooter. Aside from being messy and discourteous to your fellow members, shooting at targets placed on the ground is an invitation to ricochets. This is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS!

Any person who creates a danger on the range is subject to immediate removal and loss of privileges and/or loss of membership!

Questions about range policy should be directed to the Chief Range Officer, Bruce Matthies, or to the Assistant Range Officer, Ken Curtis.

Outdoor Range work scheduled for November 6

Two weekends ago, we had a work project at the outdoor range. Our goal was to begin replacing the 25-yard target spindle boards. We had a tremendous turnout of volunteers on October 23 and got most of the necessary work done before 10AM.

Now, we need to see if we can duplicate it this coming weekend. Six new planks have arrived at the outdoor range and we need workers to help remove the old turning target spindles and to drill the new planks. If you can spare a couple hours Saturday morning, we would absolutely be thrilled to have your help so we can complete this project before the snow flies.

We hope to start work around 9am.

If we can’t complete the project, we’ve scheduled another work date for the following Saturday, November 13. If we complete the project, there will be an announcement on this website.

In Memoriam

We regret to inform members that Life Member David Jauch, DDS, passed away on Friday October 8. Calling hours will be Tuesday and Wednesday from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 PM at the Dietrich Funeral Home, 2480 Kensington Avenue. A burial Mass will be held Thursday at 11:30 AM. Indoor Range Paving Project

The project to pave the indoor range parking lot was completed today. Many thanks to Loewer Paving who began the job months ahead of our expected schedule.

Thanks are also due Roy Smith and Bill Frears who helped to cut back the overgrown brush along the edges of the parking area.

Iroquois Varsity Rifle Team Begins Its Season

The Iroquois High School Varsity Rifle Team began its season last week with their first practices at our range. The team generally meets at our indoor range from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. There are no practices on Friday, school holidays, or any day that school is canceled due to weather. When the team is using the range, both ranges are reserved for their exclusive use — primarily for safety’s sake. If the team’s practices or matches run past 6:00 p.m., please have patience and understanding. We want to encourage the kids and ensure they have favorable opinions about guns, our club, and our members!

Please check our online calendar for updates because we will post the weeks when the team will not be using the range due to Christmas and Mid-Winter breaks.

Nominations Sought for Club Officers

Our annual election of club officers is held at the December meeting, which means that candidates must be nominated at this coming meeting. Per our Constitution, any member who has been a member in good standing for at least one year, and who has attended half of the preceding year’s meetings, is eligible to run for an office.

If you are interested in running for an office, please have someone nominate you at the meeting. Be prepared to describe what you would like to achieve for the Club as an Officer, of course!
