Youth Shooting 2019 / 2020 Season

As the calendar turns from August to September our youth shooting program will be getting under way. Our instructors met twice over the summer, discussing ideas on how to fine-tune our program and making sure all our equipment is ready for the new season.

Our first indoor session will be Friday, September 27th (all sessions are on the website calendar.) While we have a great group of instructors we do need additional help. If you can commit to be a part of the team on a regular basis, great. If you can come a few times, that would be helpful too. It’s a great way to get in your required work hours, but even more it’s truly a rewarding experience, seeing kids learn to shoot safely and accurately while coming to appreciate the sport as much as we all do.

This year we’ll be adding some “reaction” targets where the kids can shoot at targets other than paper. We also plan to increase use of the BB guns, […]

New Club Record

Martin broke the club’s Steel challenge record (formerly held by Don K) at last nights event. Martin drew from a holster and recorded hits on five out of five steel targets of varying sizes, heights and distances in 3.81 seconds. Wow. Martin is at the outdoor range practicing every Tuesday night should you need some pointers.

WE DO STEEL, TOO!

Summer is well under way and that means that so too is Ten X’s very own version of Steel Challenge Shooting . . . we call it Stogies & Steel!

Though the moniker implies that a good cigar is a requirement for participation, most of you will be happy to learn that it is not! Anybody who may legally possess a handgun in the State of New York can join us for an entertaining and educational opportunity to work on some of the fundamental aspects of tactical pistol shooting.

Just know that there will likely be a fair number of decent puros polluting up all the air in Newstead as a good smoke always makes everything better!

Inspired by the Steel Challenge Shooting Association, our Club’s very informal meets provide a safe, supervised environment and a relaxed atmosphere to practice with the gun of your choice. As long as you bring adequate eye and ear protection, you can use any type […]

Good News for Youth Shooting in New York State

Some good news came out of Albany recently regarding youth shooting programs in the state. A bill up for consideration in the state Assembly and Senate would have effectively ended youth shooting programs for those under age 16. Thankfully the final bill provided an exemption that will allow youth shooting (including programs like ours at Ten X) to continue in the state. Here is an article about the issue: https://www.thedailynewsonline.com/bdn01/supervised-youth-access-to-firearms-safe-under-amended-state-law-20190622

Final Youth Shooting Session of the Season this Friday May 10th!

We’ll be wrapping up another successful season of our Youth Shooting program this Friday, May 10th @ 6:30pm. As always, new shooters please arrive @ 6pm for safety training and orientation. We’ll be having a pizza party following our shooting and Dan DeKruger will be awarding more of the youth shooting achievement awards.

It truly has been a good season. We really feel like we’ve got things set up and running smoothly as we complete our second full year. We’ve also had special sessions for Boy Scout groups, individual sessions for a group from Rochester, and now we’re learning that the Girl Scouts are ready to start to allow their girls to participate in the shooting sports as individual troops. We’re optimistic that starting in the fall we’ll be able to get the Girls Scouts active in our program.

I also want to take this opportunity to thank all of our instructors, other members who have helped us out, and the Board of Directors for their continued support of the […]

Youth Shooting Update: April 15, 2019

Our session this past Friday the 12th was our most well-attended session in our history! We were joined by four young ladies from the Rochester area, as well as a couple of additional high-school competitive shooters. It says a lot about our program that we have kids coming a distance just to participate – there really are very few programs like ours anywhere in Western New York and the parents of the kids from Rochester were very complementary and grateful for our efforts. The club should truly be proud of what we’re doing for kids and their families.

One challenge we did have was that someone broke the white folding table in the upstairs range that we use as part of our program. Because of that we were limited to eight kids on the line, instead of ten. This resulted in kids having to take shifts for their shooting. We would have been able to let more kids put more rounds down range had we been made aware and been […]

Ten X and the Youth Shooting program on TV!

For Spectrum cable subscribers in Erie & Niagara counties, tune in to channel 1303 (LCTV) on Wednesday, April 3rd @ 4pm when Ten X President Peter Vasilion and Ten X Competitive Team Coach Leif Johnson are interviewed on Outdoor Beat with Bill Hilts, Jr. Bill writes on outdoor sports and news for The Buffalo News and is a regular contributor on WBEN and WLVL radio. Peter and Leif will be discussing the youth shooting program at Ten X, the changes that have occurred in the NY State High School shooting sports programs, as well as how and why we started a youth program at Ten X. This is fantastic publicity for both the club and our youth program. Bill has already invited us to return as guests on the show later in the year. We also hope to have Bill come speak to a general membership meeting in the coming months, where he will discuss issues of interest for shooters, hunters, fishermen and general outdoor enthusiasts.

Youth Shooting Program Update – March 17th, 2019

Lots happening with our Youth Shooting Program!

First, thanks to Walt Conley, Jim Wieberg and Tim Colf for assembling our new safe that we received from this year’s NRA Foundation grant. This is a major addition to our program, allowing us to safely store our growing collection of rifles, while also serving as an instructional tool for the kids in the proper and safe storage of firearms. Thanks again to members Dave & Doug Scranton from Scranton’s Thruway Builders for taking delivery of the safe for us at their loading docks. Thanks also to Charlie Fissler who picked up the safe from Scranton’s and delivered it over to the club. And thanks as well to those who were “volunteered” as they came into our March 4th General Membership meeting, to carry the modular safe parts into the club. Check out the photo of the assembled safe:

In other news, several of our shooters continue to receive performance awards for their marksmanship with both pellet rifles and BB guns. Shooters […]
